All Souls Session

The session is made up of officers called Elders.

Elders are elected by the congregation, and provide oversight to the congregation by teaching, overseeing, leading and protecting.

Here are the current elders at All Souls:

(Ruling Elder, Rick Clark, is not listed because he is currently on his sabbatical year, 2018-19.)

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF ALL SOULS?

I have been a part of All Souls since its beginning.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO SERVE AS AN ELDER? HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE GOD CALLING YOU TO THIS OFFICE?

I’m not sure I would say that I wanted to serve as an Elder, but I did hear the voice of God (which sounded very much like Shayne’s) calling me to be an Elder.

When I was asked, I really did feel like I had the opportunity to serve the church and congregation I love with some of the limited gifts God has given to me. I felt a peace that this was what God was asking me to do and moved forward based on His peace. It has been a blessing, and at times a challenge, to serve.

WHAT OTHER WAYS HAVE YOU SERVED AT ALL SOULS? WHAT OTHER WAYS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH?

I’ve served in the men’s ministry, taught Sunday School, served in the nursery, led a community group, participated in mission trips, co-led the confirmation class, facilitated a financial stewardship class, changed light bulbs …

HOW HAS GOD USED ALL SOULS IN YOUR LIFE?

It has encouraged me, challenged me, fed me and connected me to God and his community. All Souls has been a tremendous blessing to my family as well.

My parents thought it was a great idea for me to take accordion lessons while in junior high school … if that wasn’t an awkward time already.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF ALL SOULS?

I have been attending All Souls since 2007 when my wife, Esta, and I moved to Decatur.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO SERVE AS AN ELDER? HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE GOD CALLING YOU TO THIS OFFICE?

I saw God transforming our community through All Souls, and I wanted to actively support the church on its journey. From working with the youth group and VBS to leading community groups and the deacons, I have been fortunate to participate in or support many of the different ministries at All Souls and wanted to utilize those experiences to help lead and encourage the church.

WHAT OTHER WAYS HAVE YOU SERVED AT ALL SOULS? WHAT OTHER WAYS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH?

I have served in multiple roles, including liturgist, community group leader, VBS, and most recently as a deacon.

HOW HAS GOD USED ALL SOULS IN YOUR LIFE?

God has taught me the importance of relationships and community. When our twin girls were born, we were excited but also overwhelmed. The church community was so supportive and helpful throughout the first few months. We were greatly encouraged by our experience of God’s grace and have sought to help other families in the same way.

At one point during school I was able to read 5 different languages: Italian, French, Latin, German, and English.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF ALL SOULS?

I have been a part of All Souls since Day 1 (or before if you count the planning meetings!)

WHY DID YOU WANT TO SERVE AS AN ELDER? HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE GOD CALLING YOU TO THIS OFFICE?

I grew up with my parents involved in not one, but two, church plants–both of which were way wackier than All Souls! But as wacky as they were, I also saw God move through church communities in amazing ways. So I suppose my parents' example of helping lead church communities encouraged me to do the same.

One of my earliest memories of All Souls was seeing the Gospel impact people's lives in so many different ways, so helping foster such a community just felt natural.

WHAT OTHER WAYS HAVE YOU SERVED AT ALL SOULS? WHAT OTHER WAYS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH?

The earliest days of All Souls had my wife, Kim, and I teaching Sunday School (anyone remember Kid Zone?) for elementary and middle school. I've also led community groups on and off. Recently I've ventured back into Sunday School and will be teaching 4th/5th graders this year.

HOW HAS GOD USED ALL SOULS IN YOUR LIFE?

Most recently I've been encourage to see how All Souls has impacted our whole family, being involved in MLK work days and going to Guatemala to build houses.

It's been especially exciting to see our three sons get engaged with the youth group and even teaching Sunday School.

Having lived in Atlanta for 30 plus years I've come to appreciate and enjoy college football, but my deepest sports passions still lie in upstate NY, hoping every year that either Cornell hockey or Syracuse basketball will win just one more national championship.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF ALL SOULS?

My family and I have been at All Souls for about 12 years now.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO SERVE AS AN ELDER? HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE GOD CALLING YOU TO THIS OFFICE?

At first, I wasn’t sure I wanted to be an Elder until I better understood that being an Elder is another opportunity to love and serve God’s people.

After being nominated for a second time, I was reminded of how important it is for God’s people to see those that lead also serve.

WHAT OTHER WAYS HAVE YOU SERVED AT ALL SOULS? WHAT OTHER WAYS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH?

I have been apart of the Children’s ministry for most of my time at All Souls, teaching and serving on the Children's Advisory Board for many years. This is important to me because: “Children are a mirror and dare we look inside. We would find that God has much to say wrapped up in little lives.” gwt

I've also been involved with Men’s Retreats, Community Groups, Men’s Breakfasts, and Men’s Connection Groups.

HOW HAS GOD USED ALL SOULS IN YOUR LIFE?

All Souls has been a life-giving place that has provided opportunities for my family to grow in relationships and be refreshed by the consistent message of God’s grace.

I love that my boys talk about Christianity in the context of relationship.
